About Councillor Doug Birkinshaw

Doug's father (a Barnsley lad) moved to the midlands during the war, but regular visits back with his family to see friends and relatives still living in Barnsley built up many happy memories for the young Doug. Eleven years ago Doug returned to the town where he and his wife Glenis, (a Barnsley lass) made their home and settled.
On leaving school with 10 'O' levels, Doug gained qualifications in Mechanical Engineering at Mathew Boulton College and Management Studies at Tamworth College. He worked for Dunlop / Goodyear as a Technical Liaison Officer UK and Europe, for 41 years.
A Labour Party member since the 1970's Doug has had 27 years experience of being a councillor. He has been a representative on, Borough, Parish and County Council, holding several key positions while in office. The work he has done in these roles has given him valuable skills and knowledge which he has been able to use in his current role as Councillor for Central ward.
When Doug is not doing his council duties or enjoying his family life with his wife and grandchildren you will find him, rod in hand, sitting at the side of some peaceful stretch of water catching fish and contemplating the joys of nature.
